Sumy State University joined the signatories of the Talloires declaration created by the HEIs’ rectors for the world higher education institutions. Its text was composed in 1990 on the International conference “Universities’ contribution to the environment management and sustainable development”, which took place at Talloire (France) in the European center of the Tufts University (Tufts University located in the USA, Massachusetts). As of March 2019, the declaration has been signed by more than 500 universities and colleges from more than 50 countries worldwide. The number of signatories is constantly growing.

The Talloires declaration signatories recognizing the higher education institutions to be at the forefront of education, scientific researches, politics formation and information exchange for achieving sustainable development goals, undertake self-imposed commitments to: spread the information about ecologically sustainable development; create basis structure of ecological persistence; form society’s responsible attitude toward environment; promote the improvement of general ecological competence; put ecological programs into practice; involve all the concerned parties; provide complex approach; engage primary and secondary schools to work; support public awareness campaign across the country and abroad; constantly support the movement.
