On 7 October 2022, the Suspilne Sumy channel reported on life of SumDU foreign students after returning from evacuation.

In March, some of foreign students have left sieged Sumy via green corridors. Now, they are in Sumy again (mostly, medicine students).

Valid JODA came to Sumy from Palestine. He has been living in Ukraine for six years. Now, he completes the second academic year of clinical studies in hospital as a pediatrician.

“After finishing my school, I came to Ukraine. I completed the general medicine course because I like studying here. Therefore, I continue my clinical studies at Sumy State University”, – said Valid.

At SumDU, Valid has learned Russian. Now, he dreams of mastering Ukraine.

“I have been already in Sumy for a month. Everything is OK. There are shelters at university, medical institutions. Any student, patient or staff member can take cover here”, – stated Valid.

Nafis AHMED is a fourth academic year Indian student in general medicine. After leaving sieged Sumy via the green corridor on 8 April 2022, he returned with caution.

“I returned to Ukraine. Firstly, I had been in Odesa for three days. Then, I moved to Kyiv. In Sumy, I have been already for a month. I visit all shops, infrastructure places. Everything remains in the same state as before the war. Now, when I hear alerts, I proceed to shelters. Classes are usually online. When I need assistance, I consult doctors working in hospitals”, – talked Nafis.

After his summer vacation, Nafis is planning to keep studying. He talked to friends in Sumy and understood that it would be safe here.

Yevhen KOVALENKO (deputy head of the Department of International Education) told that about 30 foreign students had returned to Sumy.

“Before the war beginning, about 2100 foreign students from over 50 countries studied at SumDU. Most students came from India and Africa. Some of students are returning now. Among them, there are students from India, Turkmenistan, Palestine, Jordan. Considering the current wartime situation till its full stabilization, we are waiting for our victory. Thus, we do not make students return as soon as possible”, – he underlined.

Yevhen KOVALENKO showed our crew one of shelters for students, teachers and all other people. Here, they have water supplies and a first-aid kit.
