Sumy State University conducts stable educational activities using modern distance technologies, discipline programs in all majors are performed qualitatively, as evidenced by the test of students' knowledge based on the results of the first module of the autumn semester.

Since the beginning of the new academic year, lectures for students of all forms of education are held by distance learning, and in connection with the introduction of stricter quarantine measures from October 12th - in structural units located in Sumy, and from October 15th - also in units located in other cities, all classes are held exclusively online, using remote technologies.

Video studios of Sumy State University give teachers the opportunity to conduct classes online as effectively as possible. Both own university information resources and world-famous platforms are used for the communication of teachers with students.

“The organization of lectures and seminars, for example, through the YouTube channel allows several thousand participants to join the educational process at the same time, as well as to demonstrate various online teaching materials. In addition, teachers and students have the opportunity to discuss the subject of classes virtually in audio and video format or communicate in a chat, "- said Anatolii Syzyk, a leading specialist at the Center for Computer Technology of SumDU.

Online training in various majors has its own features. Svitlana Baranova, the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Philology and Social Communications for Methodical Work, spoke about the way the representatives of humanity majors are coping with the situation:

"At the faculty of Foreign Philology and Social Communications of SumDU all types of classes - lectures, practical and laboratory, during the quarantine are conducted online. The latest technologies provide full-fledged live communication, so even remotely there is a sense of presence in the classroom, discussion, and implementation of practical tasks. Teachers use GoogleMeet, ZOOM platforms, some turn to Trello, communicate with students via e-mail, Telegram, Viber, or Skype.

According to the Svitlana Baranova, the university-wide Mix platform is actively used to test students' knowledge. Tasks prepared for the test are also set out in the Mix. It works very simply - students connect to the system through a personal account, they are given tasks and timeframe to pass the test.

Svitlana Baranova stressed that there were no difficulties with the transition to the online learning format.

Maksym Kolesnyk, the Deputy Dean for Educational and Organizational Work, told about the classes at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technologies. The faculty members also actively use well-known programmes for video conferences (ZOOM, GoogleMeet, WebEx, etc.), GoogleClassroom platform, MS Team, and their own resources.

"The recording of educational videos and webinars to ensure effective and convenient interactive communication of participants is carried out with the help of the video studio of SumDU," - said Maksym Kolesnyk. He noted that the virtual laboratory works and simulators have been developed in a number of disciplines.

"A virtual simulator is a so-called trainer, a tool that simulates experiments, demonstrations, or processes. One of the main features of virtual simulators it's interactive capabilities. Such simulators can be implemented by combining computers, graphics, and software. Interactive modeling is becoming increasingly important as a tool for learning and understanding complex ideas. When performing virtual laboratory work, the student creates the illusion of working on real equipment. Moreover, the "experimental" indicator of the measured values is determined independently of the actual settings of a particular work. These data are entered into the programme and displayed in the form of charts or tables", Maksym Kolesnyk said.

The online training of medical students also has its peculiarities. According to the Director of the Medical Institute Andrii Loboda, since the beginning of the academic year, the classes in state-regulated majors of the subject 22 Health care (221 Dentistry, 222 Medicine, 223 Nursing, 227 Physical therapy, Ergotherapy, 228 Pediatrics, 229 Public health) were held in small groups (6-7 people) on clinical bases to ensure the obtaining of practical skills by applicants. In addition, the opportunities of the university platform MixLearning were widely used for independent preparation of students and preparation for test licensing exams Krok. After the deterioration of the epidemiological situation, from October 15th, 2020, classes for all majors and courses were transferred completely into distance format on their own educational distance platforms (MixLearning, OCW), electronic applications and tools provided by Google (Google Meet, Google Classroom), Zoom, WebEX platforms. In addition, group services are widely used in Viber, Telegram, and Facebook.

However, the organization of the educational process in the conditions of quarantine restrictions at the university has its difficulties. The peculiarities and issues were discussed at the regular meeting of the quality council. The lack of live communication in the classroom, the inability to discuss the problematic topic face to face with the teacher require increased motivation of students. Also, the distance learning during the quarantine is characterized by uneven technical equipment of participants in the educational process, and for certain majors (medical, "Psychology", "Physical Education and Sports"), educational components (practical training, certification activities) and types of classes (laboratory works) the remote form is not entirely successful and acceptable.

At the same time, updating teaching methods and technologies, disseminating the best and most effective examples of blended learning, providing the safest conditions for higher education, including transferring education into online format determine the realities of the current model of the educational process in quarantine restrictions. In particular, next month there will be general recommendations for participants in the educational process of the university on the use of electronic learning resources for various types of classes, considering their limitations, disadvantages, and advantages.
