A ceremonial meeting dedicated to the 32nd anniversary of the signing of the Magna Charta Universitatum and the launch of an updated version of the document was held online on June 16-17, 2021.

The ceremony was attended by more than 200 signatories of the renewed Magna Charta Universitatum 2020, uniting progressive institutions of higher education in Europe and the world, including Sumy State University. Our university was represented by the Rector Vasyl KARPUSHA and the Rector’s Assistant for International Relations, Head of the International Affairs Department Kostyantyn KYRYCHENKO.

Due to changes in the environment of activity, problems, and challenges the universities face over the three decades, there was a need to prepare a new document that would reflect these trends and strengthen the role of HEIs in society for future generations.

The updated document, which confirms the global dimension of universities, as well as their significant role in overcoming the modern challenges of humanity, was approved by the Council of the Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum in March 2020.

Due to the continuation of the quarantine restrictions, the organizers invited the partner universities to hold a solemn signing ceremony in the video format. SumDU willingly joined such an important initiative. On May 5, the Rector Vasyl KARPUSHA signed the renewed Magna Charta Universitatum.

Participation of SumDU in the meeting of signatories of the renewed Magna Charta Universitatum – the evidence of the recognized university integration into the international educational community, introduction of European standards in educational and scientific services, strong international cooperation of SumDU in the European higher education area.
