The 2021 IEEE 11th International Conference "Nanomaterials: Applications & Properties", held annually by Sumy State University in cooperation with the IEEE Nanotechnology Council with the support of the IEEE Magnetics Society, and the International Union for Pure & Applied Physics finished its work in Odesa.

The scientists of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technologies and the Medical Institute of SumDU took an active part in the organization and holding of this year's conference.

The organizing committee of the 11th conference was headed by prof. Oleksandr POHREBNIAK (Head of the Department of Nanoelectronics and Surface Modification of SumDU) and Valentyn NOVOSAD (IEEE Nanotechnology Council, USA). The technical committee consisted of prof. Goran KARAPETROV (Drexel University, USA), prof. Maksym POGORIELOV (SumDU Medical Institute) and prof. Oleksandr PROKOPENKO (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv).

The conference was organized in a mixed format using modern online communication platforms. This allowed gathering a large audience of scientists not only in the conference halls of the hotel "Gagarinn" (Odesa) but also online in Zoom. In total, the conference was attended by more than 300 participants, including about 80 participants online.

According to the scientific programme of the conference, 4 plenary sessions, 33 invitations, 62 oral presentations, and more than 130 poster presentations were presented during 5 working days. About 30% of all reports were made online.

In particular, on the first day of the conference prof. Nestor J. ZALUZEC (Northern Illinois University, USA) gave an online lecture on "Modern electron microscopy".

Also, the conference presented plenary reports of prof. Yury GOGOTSI, prof. Shaowei CHEN, prof. Laura H. GREENE and prof. Bingqing (B.Q.) WEI. All of these scientists work at high-rated United States research institutions such as the University of Drexel, the University of California, Santa Cruz, the University of Delaware, and the University of Florida. Their reports focused on current issues of modern science, primarily the study of MXenes, new materials for electrochemical energy technologies, super semiconductors, and quantum materials, the physical properties of which cannot be described in the terminals of semiclassical elementary particles and low-level mechanics.

Among the topics of the conference, which were presented by the speakers, there are three main ones - nanomagnetism and magnetic materials, the use of nanotechnology in biomedicine, and multifunctional thin films and coatings.

Also for students, postgraduates, and young scientists with the participation of IEEE Young Professionals a round table "Meeting with experts" was organized and a review lecture on the importance of negotiation skills for professional and career growth, which was given by Prof. Laura GREENE. There was also a round table of participants in the NanoSurf 777926 and CanBioSe 778157 projects under the Horizon 2020 grant programme.

For the first time in the framework of the conference competition of scientific drawings combining nanoscience and art "Nanoscience as Art" was held. The organizing committee of the competition received about 20 photos on various topics and determined 3 winners. They were Yana SUCHIKOVA (Berdiansk State Pedagogical University), Kamila ABUZAROVA (Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University), and Maksym POGORIELOV (Sumy State University).

According to the memorandum signed with the IEEE, the conference materials will be published in the Proceedings of the 11th International Conference "Nanomaterials: Applications and Properties" (ISBN: 978-1-6654-3907-7).

The best reports with the support of sponsors were awarded special prizes - "Rising Star in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology". In addition, thanks to the grants from the IEEE Magnetics Society and the US-Ukraine Foundation Biotechnology Initiative, this year it was managed to provide about 35 grants for young scientists of various categories.

Traditionally, the organizing committee of the conference announced its holding next year. The 2022 IEEE 12th International Conference “Nanomaterials: Applications & Properties” will take place in Krakiw (Poland) from 10 to 16 of September 2022. SumDU scientists plan to organize it together with colleagues from the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice (Poland).
