On 16-19 July 2023, the Hungarian city of Debrecen held the European 3x3 Basketball Tournament among universities. The male category was represented by 24 teams. The Ukrainian national team comprised SumDU students.

The team under Yaroslav KOVALOV won national tournaments several years. However, the quarantine and full-scale invasion caused their European entrance only via the fourth attempt.

The SumDU team has fully completed the group stage (place 1 in group B). Gradually, they defeated the Cologne Sports University (Germany) – 19:8, the Corvinus University of Budapest (Hungary) – 21:15, the University of Valencia (Spain) – 21:12, the University of Dubrovnik (Croatia) – 21:16, the Brno University of Technology – 22:10.

On the play-off stage, the team defeated the University of Maribor (Slovenia) – 21:8, the University of Bordeaux (France) – 21:12 and the Ruppin Academic Center (Israel) – 21:12.

Unfortunately, Ihor STARODUB (a PhD student of the Business, Economics and Management Institute and the team leader) was injured during the Israel semi-final and could not participate in the final. Playing as a threesome without replacements and the captain, the SumDU team could not defeat the Lithuanian rival from the Vytautas Magnus University – 10:21.

Therefore, silver medals were awarded to the SumDU students.

The team participants were Ihor STARODUB, Illia KABATSIURA, Serhii STARTSEV, Yevhen BALABAN. Their coach was Yaroslav KOVALOV.

SumDU is proud of such a victory! Let our athletes succeed in further Ukrainian and foreign tournaments!
