The past year has been truly significant for the SumDU sports community. Students and graduates of Sumy State University won medals at world and European championships, World and European Cup stages, World Universiades, and ranking tournaments. They represented not only the university but also Ukraine on the international stage.

The university’s athletes competed in over 15 sports from dozens of countries, demonstrating a high level of training, professionalism, and performance.

Among year highlights were successes of SumDU biathletes. At the Junior World Championships in Östersund (Sweden) Bohdan BORKOVSKYI, Serhii SUPUN, and Kseniia PRYKHODKO performed confidently in individual and team disciplines. At the XXXII World Winter Universiade in Turin, Bohdan BORKOVSKYI and Serhii SUPUN won five awards at once: three gold, one silver and one bronze. It confirmed the high international class of Ukrainian student biathlon.

The university’s track and field athletes also showed great results. Diana HONCHARENKO made her debut at the European Championships in the Netherlands. SumDU graduate Oleksandr POHORILKO set a Ukrainian national record in the 400-meter dash. Sprinter Mykola RUSCHAK won bronze medals at the World Series stages and the World Summer Universiade.

The year 2025 was particularly successful for judokas. SumDU representatives regularly climbed podiums of European Cups, World Championships, and World Summer Universiade. The gold medals won by Mykyta HOLOBORODKO at the European Open Cup in Benidorm and Stanislav RYBIN at the European Cup in Malaga made a significant contribution to international ranking of Ukrainian student judo.

Other sports also brought resounding victories. Anhelina VELYCHKO became the world champion in combat sambo among adults. In para-swimming, Vladyslav KOSHMAN won several medals at the World Championships in Singapore and met the standard for international class master of sports in Ukraine. In field hockey, Mariia BARDAKOVA, as part of the Ukrainian national team, won gold at the European Championships and was named the best tournament goalkeeper.

A separate event was the victory of Oleksandr KHODAKOV at the World Mixed Martial Arts Championship in Tbilisi. It was Ukraine’s first gold medal in the 95+ weight category.

Medals from international competitions in karate, archery, sambo, cross-country skiing, 3×3 basketball, and other disciplines confirm that SumDU’s sporting success is systematic. It is result of the coordinated work of coaches, departments, and university sport units.

The sporting victories of SumDU students are not only awards, but also an important contribution to the international authority of the university. It forms a positive image of Ukraine in the global student sports arena. In today’s difficult conditions, SumDU athletes prove that perseverance, professionalism, and belief in victory can represent the country at the highest level.
