On February 17th, the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center hosted a briefing "Sustainability and Security: What Ukraine Can Learn from NATO?" The event was co-organized by the Research Center for Regional Security and the Department of Psychology, Political Science and Sociocultural Technologies of Sumy State University.

The discussion was attended by the representatives of the Ukrainian Government, foreign diplomats, the People's Deputies of Ukraine, and the experts in the field of national stability.

Mykola Nazarov, Ph.D., the Head of the Research Center for Regional Security, stressed that the authorities should emphasize the regional aspect of national security. The state and the leaders of the state alone cannot build a successful state and successfully defend themselves from aggression. The result is possible only in the cooperation of the state and civil society institutions.

Vineta Kleine, the Director of the NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine, thanked Sumy State University and, in particular, the Research Center for Regional Security for the organization of the event and noted that resilience is a society's ability to resist and recover quickly from a difficult situation or crisis. She also acquainted the audience with current joint international programs that support national security and defense to increase the resilience of the state.

"Sustainable Ukraine” has been operating for 5 years, and we are working to create standards for measuring national resilience to strengthen it," - said Dmytro Teperik, the Director of the “Sustainable Ukraine” program and Executive Director of the International Center for Defense and Security (ICDS). The discussion was continued by Mariana Bezuhla, the People’s Deputy of Ukraine. She stressed that national stability is closely linked to the work of special services. "One of the main priorities for strengthening the stability of Ukraine was the introduction of the Law of Ukraine "On Intelligence'", - the People's Deputy said.

Kaimo Kuusk, the Ambassador of Estonia to Ukraine, advised the Ukrainian authorities to inform international partners in a timely manner and as widely as possible about Ukraine's steps to protect national security. "Estonia welcomed Ukraine's move to impose sanctions on the oligarch and close certain TV channels because we support Ukraine in its efforts to protect itself... We support everything you do under your law, perhaps we would only advise timely dissemination of information about this through the maximum number of channels - through state information channels and even through intelligence,” – the Ambassador said.

Oleksii Henchev, a representative of the Government Office, mentioned the holding of joint training with NATO. "This year, in cooperation with NATO, we plan to hold a joint training in Odesa, “Inviolable Sustainability 2021”, to counter hybrid threats to critical infrastructure in the Black Sea region. This training will help to build interagency cooperation, as well as communication between government agencies and citizens,” – Oleksii Henchev said.

After the briefing, Mykola Nazarov spoke to the journalist of “Hromadske Radio” Andrii Kulykov about the specifics of the Center's work at SumDU and the scientific directions of its work. Follow the link to listen to the record of the conversation.
