Since the 1st of July in Ukraine the registration of electronic cabinets of school graduates has been going on, and after the main session of the NMT, from the 29th of July, the submission of applications and documents for admission to Ukrainian institutions of higher education will start, which will end on August 23.

This year, due to the full-scale war that has been going on in Ukraine for the fifth month already, applicants and their parents faced a choice more acutely than ever before: where to get higher education - in Ukrainian or European universities? The strongest argument in favor of universities in Europe at the moment is security. At the same time, modern educational electronic platforms, on which leading Ukrainian universities organize the educational process, represent the remote learning format maximum similar to the classroom one. They were already tested during the coronavirus epidemic. Therefore, a student, at his wish and under certain circumstances, has the opportunity to study being outside the city, in which the institution of higher education is located. Is it worth being under delusion of universities in Europe or better to choose a university with a level of European education in Ukraine? What are the advantages of Ukrainian higher education institutions, in particular Sumy State University, the university rector Vasyl KARPUSHA shared his thoughts in an interview with the Sumy TV channel.

Vasyl Danylovych, it is no secret that many entrants and their parents, due to the difficult situation in Ukraine, are considering the possibility of admission to European universities. What path do you advise entrants to choose?

First of all, it is worth answering the main questions: what do applicants and their parents seek when they choose one or another institution? What knowledge and skills do they want to acquire? What future prospects do they count on? What does this or that university can offer and give to a young person? What are the opportunities in the chosen institution for acquiring so-called soft skills: in particular, the ability to manage time, work in a team, develop communication skills and develop leadership qualities? His future life and professional career will largely depend on the environment in which a young person will obtain higher education.

Important criteria are higher positions in the world and domestic rankings. Influential international higher education quality agencies evaluate universities according to various indicators: reputation in the academic environment, citations of scientific publications, internationalization of the educational process and international academic cooperation, attitude of employers to graduates, etc. And the fact that Sumy State University is among the 3% of the best universities in the world testifies to its high level of education quality. Believe me, the majority of foreign universities that Ukrainian applicants are currently going to choose are far beyond this 3%. Sumy State University allows students to listen to lectures by world-renowned scientists, conduct scientific research with them, and develop creative and sports talents. For example, at the 2022 European University Games in Poland, Sumy State University will represent the largest team of participants among Ukrainian higher education institutions. All of this suggests that it is worth choosing a university not according to the country of its location, but the opportunities it offers for personal and professional realization.

So, if there is a desire to get good European education, then studying at Sumy State University is the best way to realize these intentions. After all, our university is known for a large range of international activities. Last year, more than 500 students studied at foreign universities under modern joint programs. Recently, in collaboration with 14 leading universities and companies of the world, Sumy State University received a powerful grant project within the framework of the Horizon Europe Program of the European Union, which is the largest international grant program to support advanced scientific research.

In total, Sumy State University cooperates with 300 partners in 55 countries of the world. Last year, more than 300 guests visited our university, including ambassadors of foreign countries, famous scientists, public figures, and politicians.

The cooperation of Sumy State University with European and world institutions of higher education in the format of "universities-brothers" is developing. Currently, Sumy State University and its university-brother from the city of Liverpool are jointly working on the implementation of educational programs, academic mobility programs, and conducting scientific research. In the near future, it is planned to open a joint educational platform on which the best educational programs of Sumy State University, developed with the participation of well-known British professors, will be based. And this is also evidence of the recognition of our university in the world scientific and educational space and another useful contribution to the development of the model of our university as an innovation-oriented university, which involves the harmonization of educational, research and active international activities.

Our students, if they wish, have the opportunity during their studies to have additional income to the scholarship, in particular, by joining work on scientific research projects, working in structural divisions of the university, in partner institutions. On the other hand, even if studying in Europe will be free, housing, food, transfers, medical and other services will require substantial funds that must be taken from somewhere. But it can be problematic to have part-time work during studies. After all, due to a large number of immigrants and refugees, jobs in European countries are scarce. If we take into account the language issue, the peculiarities of the multicultural environment, the specifics of admission and study, etc., then Ukrainian universities have more advantages.

In my opinion, the choice in favor of a Ukrainian university is promising investment both in the own future and in the future of our country, which after the victory will need qualified, competent and creative specialists even more.
