On 4 October 2023, the opening of student games took place in the Palace of Sports. That was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the SumDU foundation.

Over 600 athletes from educational institutions and units of law enforcement agencies will compete in ten sports on the university area.

As Vasyl KARPUSHA (the SumDU rector) emphasized in his welcoming speech to the participants, these 75 years mean success and development in education, research and sports.

Currently, the university is developing more than 40 types of sports. Over 200 athletes are prize winners of international competitions, Olympic games and world championships. This year, the Sumy State University team won the second place among 125 higher education institutions of Ukraine at the 18th Summer Student Games.

“We are a powerful invincible nation. Sport improves your strength, will, courage, patriotism. It contributes to achieving victories on all fronts. It is in sports that real fighters, invincible warriors are born”, – said Vasyl KARPUSHA. He thanked the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Due to them, we can hold these competitions.

As the head of the Sumy Separate Division of the Sports Student Union of Ukraine, Anatolii VASYLIEV noted that the initiative to support student sports demonstrates a deep understanding of athletic relevance in developing a healthy and invincible nation.

Among the guests of honor, at the opening there were: Yevhen POKHODNIA (head of the Youth and Sports Department of the Sumy Regional State Administration), Tetiana MISHCHENKO (director of the Sumy Research Expert Forensic Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine), Olena PETROVA (head of the Sumy Regional Branch of the Ukrainian NOC), Andrii PROKHOROVYCH (President of the Sumy Oblast Football Federation), Vladyslav MASLOV (head of the Sumy Regional Department of the Physical Education and Sports Committee of the National Academy of Sciences).

The guests stated that the sports achievements of the Sumy region on the Ukrainian and world arenas are closely related to the SumDU athletes. They expressed gratitude for the active development of the sports field. In particular, Tetiana MISHCHENKO presented a letter of gratitude to the SumDU rector for fruitful cooperation, interaction and high-quality training of personnel potential. Honorary degrees were awarded to the university members: Yaroslav KOVALIOV (the basketball team coach), Maksym KUNPAN (the sports club director) and Oleg KURYLENKO (the game sports specialist).

The student games began with the indoor football championship. Then, we will have a swimming championship, athletics competition, table tennis, beach wrestling, basketball, beach volleyball, badminton, classic volleyball and shooting. Prize-winners and winners will receive certificates of honor and SumDU cups.
