The SumDU basketball club won the male championship title for the first time at this summer’s Universiade.

On 11 June 2024, the athletes and the team coach Yaroslav KOVALOV received congratulations at their alma mater from the rector Vasyl KARPUSHA. Besides, other congratulators were representatives of the university sports management and Leonid MELNYK (a professor at the Department of Economics, Entrepreneurship and Business Administration; a veteran of the university basketball and the current team ideological mentor).

The meeting took place in the gym where the basketball players have already started their game training.

“I watched the final match. And I like your attitude. You have demonstrated the indomitable spirit of Ukrainians, strength of character and extraordinary will to win,” – shared the rector his impressions.

Vasyl KARPUSHA thanked the athletes and the coach for the excellent game and brilliant results. He noted a great contribution of the coach Yaroslav KOVALOV, his enthusiasm, care for each player, dedication to his favorite work. He wished the team to confidently conquer new heights of success.

“The SumDU BC celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. During this time, we tried to create a powerful, competitive team that would adequately represent the university at national and international competitions, looking for potential basketball players. And the results achieved at prestigious world venues show that we are succeeding. Every year we raise the level of team play,” – emphasized Yaroslav KOVALOV.

The coach noted a systematic support of sports by the university administration. He thanked the rector for understanding the club needs and for helping to organize the participation of athletes in competitions.

The players are already preparing for new challenges and believe new outstanding victories are ahead. According to Ivan FILONENKO and Viacheslav KIKTEV, team spirit and love for basketball give them confidence in this.
