On 22 August 2024, a twinning agreement was signed between Sumy (Ukraine) and Coimbra (Portugal).

Embassy members of both countries, Sumy Military Administration, SumDU and University of Coimbra, Coimbra City Hall exchanged views on importance of cooperation between Ukraine and Portugal, in particular between cities and universities.

Sumy State University was represented by Ivan KOZII (vice-rector) and Alla KRASULIA (head of the International Cooperation Department).

The participants discussed new directions for further cooperation between cities and universities.

“We express our sincere gratitude to the people of Portugal, especially the city of Coimbra, for their support and solidarity with Ukraine. We deeply appreciate your commitment to cooperation at the municipal and academic levels to expand the scientific and educational context and implement joint projects. Earlier this spring, we signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Coimbra. It is an important step of our partnership in these challenging times. The support of global and international partners is crucial for Ukraine. Sumy State University plays a relevant role in life of our community. This cooperation has a great potential to further bring our cities and universities closer. We hope all parties will benefit from our joint efforts,” – said Ivan KOZII.

“We are grateful for your desire to become twin cities in this difficult time for us. The partnership at the municipal level will not only strengthen our friendship but also improve scientific cooperation. Academic interaction at the university level was the beginning of our joint initiative to share knowledge and cultural values!” – noted Oleksii DROZDENKO (head of the Sumy Military Administration).

Joana LOUREIRO (deputy mayor of Coimbra) greeted all participants of the meeting and called signing of the twinning agreement a great step to successful cooperation. “We support the people of Ukraine, and this is our contribution. We look forward to fruitful cooperation with the city of Sumy and Sumy State University,” – she said.

International cooperation remains a priority for SumDU. The university aims at further active partnership with the University of Coimbra. It will improve development of both higher education institutions and their communities.
