On the evening of 3 September 2024, SumDU campus was struck by an air attack from the Russian military. Thankfully, there were no casualties or injuries.

The attack targeted the Mechanical Engineering Building, known as the M-Building. It houses a martial arts and combat sports gym where Sumy State University students train. The building also serves young athletes from local children’s clubs. There are also classrooms and offices, including those of the Department of Electric Power Engineering and the Computational Mechanics Department.

Once again, the enemy has disregarded humanitarian and moral laws by targeting educational infrastructure and damaging a civilian building. Yet, the Russian aggressor will not break our spirit and unity. Just hours after the strike, students, lecturers, and staff gathered to assist the State Emergency Service workers. They also offered support to nearby residents who were frightened by the explosion, demonstrating their readiness to help in any way they could. Messages of support have been pouring in from members of the educational community, colleagues, and partners, including those from abroad, as well as from posts on social media.

SumDU rector Vasyl KARPUSHA expresses his deep gratitude to everyone who has shown concern and care: “Friends and colleagues, thank you for your support, care, and offers to help. We are all deeply grateful. I especially want to thank those who immediately stepped in to address the organizational and technical challenges we faced. The most important thing is that there were no casualties. We will rebuild everything. Together. We are Sumy State University. Everything will be Ukraine!”
