SumDU has completed work on creating a digital archive of Ukrainian monuments that perpetuate the country’s history and culture. The project was carried out under the grant program “Science for Reconstruction of Ukraine in the War and Postwar Periods” with support of the Ukrainian National Research Foundation.
This initiative aimed to research and preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage through digital archiving of monuments. The project included analysis of historical, social, and gender narratives of memorialized objects, as well as creation of a modern national register of cultural monuments.
The team of researchers was led by Natalia TATSENKO (DSc in Philology, professor and head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguodidactics). Undergraduate and graduate students were also involved in the project. The team studied monuments in 15 regions of Ukraine, including Sumy.
The results are expected to contribute to preserving cultural heritage and forming patriotic concepts in public space.
“Digital archiving of monuments is not only a way to preserve history, but also a tool for rethinking narratives that should help society overcome the postcolonial legacy. It is important the registers contain objects that reflect Ukrainian values and achievements,” – Natalia TATSENKO commented on the project.
The results will be submitted to the Ministry of Culture for implementing the recommendations in the national policy of cultural heritage preservation.
