On 20 March 2025, a meeting of the Academic Board was held at SumDU. The main issue was the status of scientific activities and measures for its further development.

The agenda consideration was preceded by the awarding ceremony of the rating winners among the university structural units based on the 2024 results.

The participants were informed about the main issue of the regular meeting of the Academic Board by Anatolii CHORNOUS (vice-rector for scientific work).

First of all, he focused on the main scientific results, covering various areas and the most significant events. Among them is allocation of UAH 14.2 million to development of the material and technical base, which is the largest indicator in the university history. We received a grant from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in the amount of UAH 1.6 million for installation of a backup power source to ensure the energy sustainability of the Central Scientific and Technological Center for Materials Science. SumDU became one of the six winners of the competitive selection of projects aimed at supporting institutions to create a network of startup schools. “Journal of Engineering Sciences”” entered the WoS database and became the first of SumDU publications to be simultaneously indexed by Scopus and WoS.

The university’s publication activity in international scientific publications indexed by Scopus and/or WoS and related to the Q1 and Q2 quarters was recognized by the Ministry of Education and Science for one of the highest indicators among Ukrainian institutions.

Young scientists demonstrate significant achievements. In particular, thirteen of them became scholarship holders of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, which is the second indicator among Ukrainian universities. In terms of the number of winning projects among young scientists, SumDU shares the first place with Lviv Polytechnic.

Despite wartime challenges, university science demonstrates financial stability. The total indicator of financing scientific activities at SumDU for 2024, compared to the previous year, increased by 21% and amounts to 154.6 million UAH (2023 – 127.4 million UAH; 2022 – 90.7 million UAH; 2021 – 79.3 million UAH). That is once again the largest in the university history.

In 2024, basic funding volume for scientific activities in areas that were included in qualification group A amounted to 12.6 million UAH. It is 8.5 times more than in the previous year. Besides, according to the planned indicator of basic funding for 2025, which is about 15 million UAH, SumDU ranks second among all Ukrainian institutions.

And this is only a part of the list of scientific achievements, which indicates the priority and prospects of this area of work. In the process of considering the issue, a number of interesting and important opinions, comments and proposals for the development of university science were voiced.

As the Academic Board head, Anatolii VASYLIEV noted that in the current wartime conditions, the importance of science is growing even more. In view of this, he focused on increasing the involvement of teaching staff in scientific work in order to ensure further development and success of the university.

Vasyl KARPUSHA (SumDU rector) underlined dynamic development of science, effective work of scientists and administrative management. The financial contribution of science to the general budget basket of the university is 22%. According to the rector, this is a European-level indicator that ensures the leadership position of SumDU in the Ukrainian scientific and educational environment. Vasyl KARPUSHA thanked everyone who contributes to the success indicators. He offered prospects for further stimulation and development of scientific research, noted importance of the motivational component.

Also at the meeting, a number of documents of the university-wide regulatory framework were approved. Associate professor certificates and honorary degree diplomas were awarded. Candidates for awards for the Day of Science in 2025 were approved.
