Within a visit to Sumy Oblast, SumDU was visited by UN representatives.

The delegation included Matthias SCHMALE (UN coordinator in Ukraine), representatives of the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the UN Development Program (UNDP). OCHA coordinates efforts of all humanitarian organizations, which allows for a prompt response to wartime challenges. UNDP is implementing recovery projects in Sumy Oblast, which has been designated as a pilot for implementation of innovative approaches.

The international delegation was accompanied by Oleh HRYHOROV (head of the Sumy Oblast Military Administration), Taras SAVCHENKO (first deputy head of the Sumy Oblast Military Administration) and Oleksii DROZDENKO (deputy head of the Sumy Oblast Military Administration).

The guests were met at SumDU by rector Vasyl KARPUSHA.

UN representatives visited the tragedy site of 13 April 2025, honored the memory of the deceased, and also inspected the university buildings that were destroyed as a result of the enemy attack.

The parties discussed key areas of international support. They considered educational infrastructure recovery. Special attention was paid to assistance in restoring damaged SumDU buildings.

Matthias SCHMALE visits SumDU not for the first time. He noted the resilience and unity of the team in a difficult security situation, and also assured the UN of its readiness to support initiatives aimed at development and recovery of Ukrainian education.
