On 11 November, the University of Liverpool team, together with lecturers and students of Sumy State University who are currently undertaking research placements and studies at the partner institution, organised an educational and creative event titled “Surprising Ukraine: From Culture to Science.”

This vibrant event took place as part of the Ukrainian Week in the United Kingdom and left a lasting, inspiring impression on participants.

The programme featured:

• Poster exhibition “Hidden Ukrainian Genius” showcasing groundbreaking inventions and discoveries by Ukrainians.
• Invited lecture “The Beatles and Ukraine” delivered by Professor Yaroslav Hrytsak (Ukrainian Catholic University).
• Student art and science pitch competition “Surprising Contributions of Ukrainians to the World.”
• Screening of the documentary “Science Warriors: Vernadsky Research Base,” awarded Best Directing at the 2025 national documentary film festival Crimea for Victory. Prior to the screening, participants joined an online discussion with the film’s creator, Ukrainian television journalist Hennadiy Kurkin (Henry Keen).

“Ukrainian Week in the United Kingdom is an important initiative of the British–Ukrainian twinning association lead by Cormack Consultancy Group  and Twinning Ukraine , as well as Ukrainian institutions and foundations, including the Presidential Fund for Education, Science and Sports of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Institute , Global Coalitions of Ukrainian Studies, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. It brought together universities, researchers, and cultural partners to highlight the strength and creativity of Ukraine. And each time we witness that culture, education, and science remain our quiet yet unbreakable force, - one that not only keeps the world’s attention on Ukraine but also enables others to discover its immense potential, depth, and historical significance,” reflected on the event  Tetyana MAYBORODA, Deputy Head of the International Relations Office at Sumy State University.
