Vasyl KARPUSHA (SumDU rector) participated in a new episode of the podcast “Hands-On Medical Education”. It was hosted by Mykhailo VYNNYTSKYI, a well-known sociologist and professor.

In his opening remarks, the host called SumDU “a phenomenon worth discussing” noting that the university, located in a border region, has demonstrated impressive educational and scientific achievements and consistently ranks among Ukraine’s top institutions in global rankings.

During the conversation, they discussed how SumDU manages not only to ensure continuity of educational process but also to implement strategic development projects amid the full-scale war. The participants discussed university’s management model, staff support, research and international activities, vision for future of Ukrainian education, and – given the thematic focus of the podcast “Hands-On Medical Education”– role of the Medical Institute within the structure of a traditional university.

“85% of doctors in Sumy and oblast are SumDU graduates. Thus, the university significantly contributes to addressing shortage of medical personnel. Overall, the university is an active part of the community. And in the war context, the university’s third – social – mission has grown significantly,” – noted Vasyl Karpusha.

The rector also shared the university’s experience – located just 30 kilometers from the Russian border – and spoke about wartime challenges, reconstruction of university infrastructure, and principles that help the SumDU team maintain resilience and development.

“We strive to stay one step ahead by implementing modern educational trends,” – emphasized the rector.
