On 24 August, Ukraine celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Independence Declaration. For the nation, this is an important milestone. And for each of us, it is a special day that holds its own deep personal significance.

For some, Ukraine is their hometown, the street they live on, their family, and the home where they grew up. For others, it is the unique Ukrainian landscapes, the picturesque nature that brings peace and inspiration, and the enchanting places they always want to return to. It is the language we speak with our loved ones, the songs we have known since childhood, and the traditions passed down from generation to generation. It is our friends, colleagues, and the work we love – everything that is close to and dear to our hearts.

Our defenders fight every day to ensure that we, our loved ones, and all citizens can live in the free Ukraine. We thank everyone who stands today in defense of our country, protects our land, and brings us closer to victory. We thank everyone who supports Ukraine through their work.

On this day, we bow our heads with special gratitude in memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine. Their courage and sacrifice will forever remain part of our history and our eternal honor. We live, work, study, and build our future, remembering the price at which our freedom is won.

The war has changed each of us. But it has also shown just how strong we can be when we unite for a common cause. Soldiers are defending Ukraine on the front lines, while volunteers, medical workers, rescue workers, educators, scientists, and employees of businesses and institutions are holding the home front. Everyone who does their job with integrity, supports others, and works for the future of our country brings us closer to victory.

SumDU is part of this great, unbreakable Ukrainian community. Despite all the challenges, we continue to teach and learn, conduct research, create new projects, and support our defenders – among whom are students, staff, and alumni of the university. We are and always will be a space for support and development – for our city, region, and Ukraine.

On this day, I would like to wish you what matters most – peace of mind and opportunity to be with your loved ones, to hug them, to hear their voices, and to know that they are safe.

We believe that Ukraine will stand firm, prevail, and recover. And that very soon the time will come when we can build its future in peace and harmony.
