On October 17-20, the deputy head of International Affairs Department of Sumy State University Tetyana Mayboroda visited Nigeria.

Under support of the Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria and the Ukrainian State Center for International Education, during the visit were held meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Geoffrey ONYEAMA, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education of Nigeria, David ADEJO and relevant heads of departments, and also the Minister of Health of Nigeria, Osagie EHANIRE.

During the meetings were addressed urgent issues of Nigerian students’ education during Martial Law in Ukraine, recognition of degrees of 2022 graduates, participation of students in academic mobility programs and forms of mixed learning with partner universities abroad, recognition of online education for non-medical specialties, etc.

Also, Dr. Tetyana held a meeting with the students, who are currently placed in Nigeria, and their parents, with the VC and colleagues from the partner Bingham University purposing to deeper and expand already existing cooperation, as well as perspectives of provision of educational services, in particular, of short-term online courses, were discussed with Director General of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry Victoria AKAI. In addition, Sumy State University’s representative, on behalf of the Ukrainian State Center for International Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, gave live interview to the leading Nigerian media Prime Times.

For the notice: as of February 23, 2022, Sumy State University had 392 students from Nigeria, most of whom still continue their studies today (even during martial law). The Nigerian students’ community is the second largest (after India) and the largest among African countries at Sumy State University, being among the top 10 in terms of number among Ukrainian universities.
