Representatives of the UN Development Program visited Sumy State University. They were led by Federica Dispenza (head of the Community Security and Social Cohesion Unit).

The meeting comprised university members, the Department of Social Population Protection, veteran community, civilians. Particular attention was paid to the SumDU Veteran Development Center and medical services for former soldiers.

As the SumDU rector, Vasyl KARPUSHA noted:

“Our university has an opportunity to provide defenders with a wide range of services: medical, social and psychological aid. A powerful sports and fitness center is available for physical rehabilitation. The university implements an inclusive educational policy: professional retraining of former soldiers for civilian specialties”.

Sumy State University responds quickly to public demands and joins important initiatives. At the end of December, the university held the first graduation of veterans’ assistants. Also, we plan to launch a new educational program that will train specialists in psychological support for veterans.

Federica Dispenza (head of the Community Security and Social Cohesion Unit of the UN Recovery and Peacebuilding Program) argued the great potential of the university, its material and technical resources, staff and accumulation of new ideas.

The UNDP is going to implement a pilot project for veteran support in Sumy Oblast communities. It is funded by the Dutch government. After familiarizing herself with the university capabilities, Federica Dispenza emphasized her interest in jointly implementing grant projects.

“I am happy to be among such inspired and result-oriented people who believe in themselves and are able to implement ambitious projects,” – said Ms. Dispenza.

Finally, the parties expressed their hope for an active partnership and successful joint work to provide a comprehensive support for defenders’ returning to civilian life.
