During 1000 days of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has experienced incredible tragedies and losses.  On this sad date, 19 November 2024, SumDU honored the defenders who died for the will of the people and the territorial integrity of the state. Commemorative events were held at all university campuses with support of the SumDU trade union and the Department of Extracurricular Activities.

Students, faculty, and staff laid flowers at the Fallen Student Soldier Memorial and at the Glory Alley Memorial. The latter is dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the 155th Battalion and the Basy TRO.

A memorial event was held at the campus in the city center near the renovated wall of memory “Stop... Remember”. The project presents stories about fallen heroes who studied at SumDU.

The event brought together representatives of the university administration, students, staff, and family members of the fallen defenders.

“First of all, I want to thank our defenders who are protecting our country and those who, unfortunately, are no longer with us, who gave their lives for us. I think for all families, both military and civilian, it is very important to keep their memory alive, to create memorials, Glory Alleys, to remember heroes. It is very important that society recalls them,” – said Kateryna ZAKHARUK (wife of the fallen defender of Ukraine Ivan ZAKHARUK, one of the exhibition heroes, who studied at the Law Institute).

Anatolii VASYLIEV (chairman of the University Academic Council) emphasized the SumDU contribution to common struggle for Ukrainian independence: “Ukraine has been fighting for thousands of days and thousands of nights. For its independence... Our university also contributes to our common victory: by training, volunteering, researching. We are fighting for our right to decide our way of development, for our right to live in a democratic society”.

SumDU students have always been at the forefront of public life. With the outbreak of hostilities in the east of our country, our graduates and students joined the fight for the territorial integrity of Ukraine. With the full-scale invasion beginning, the university staff united even more for the sake of the future victory.

1000 days of the full-scale war is a reminder of our strength, unconquerability and faith in victory. The struggle continues, and therefore, each of us must do our part to bring the long-awaited victory and peace closer.

“We must always remember the names of our defenders, honor their memory, donate, help the army, tell our foreign friends about what is happening in Ukraine. Together we can do everything for victory,” – said student rector Daryna KICHKO.
