On 17 December 2024, SumDU hosted the grand opening of the second stage of the XV International Taras Shevchenko Literary Contest for pupils and students.

The event brought together about 70 participants: students and applicants.

The opening remarks noted an important role of the Ukrainian language in statehood development. One argued relevance of the Great Kobzar’s heritage.

Inna SHKOLNYK (first vice-rector) addressed participants at the opening ceremony:

“Taras Shevchenko is our national hero and the nation light. He is a symbol of Ukrainian invincibility. Everyone who has gathered here today is a connoisseur of what the Great Kobzar brings to us. I wish the contestants to reveal their abilities, showing their love for Shevchenko and Ukraine”.

Viktoriia HROBOVA (director at the Department of Education and Science of the Sumy Regional State Administration) also joined in the greetings. She underlined: participating in such competitions, we form a strong Ukrainian nation and popularize the Ukrainian language and culture.

Volodymyr SADIVNYCHYI (head of the Department of Journalism and Philology, chief of the Sumy Regional Organization of the National Journalism Union) was in charge of the jury.

“I wish everyone not to be afraid of the word. We should respect speech: it is our weapon. If each of us stands up to defend it, we will survive against all hazards!” – said the jury chairman.

The musical accompaniment created a festive atmosphere. Students Vira BARDAKOVA and Daria RUBAN performed Ukrainian songs.

After the solemn part, participants began to write their contest papers. Winners of the second stage will take part in the national competition.

“I really liked the atmosphere of this creative competition. Of course, I was nervous before the start. However, I was given inspiration and confidence. Although the tasks were not easy, I enjoyed participating,” – said students Anastasia PETUKHOVA.

We wish all participants successful completion of tasks, creative growth and worthy representation at the next contest stages!
