On September 11th, Sumy State University hosted a workshop “Ukraine-NATO: partnership for the sake of peace”. Students of the majors “Translation”, “Social Work” and “Management of Sociocultural Activity” had heard the lecture of the international security policy specialist, Director of the Foreign Policy Research Institute Hryhorii Perepelytsia on the topic of “NATO Key Challenges, Values and Principles in Ukraine”. The students also spoke with the First Secretary of the British Embassy in Ukraine James Roed-Moore and project experts. The participants learned how to distinguish between misinformation during the simulation game "Countering Propaganda Information Attacks Against Ukraine-NATO Cooperation on the example of regional media messages as a component of cybersecurity". Within the game, students tried themselves as analysts, preparing materials to counteract the information attacks against Ukraine's cooperation with NATO, and were able to understand the nature of hybrid war myths and to learn to distinguish them from reports in the media and social networks.

On September 11th at the World Academic summit in Zurich the Times Higher Education ranking agency (THE) presented the results of its flagman ranking THE World University Rankings of 2020. The ranking evaluates specifically research-intensive universities and considered to be one of the most established rankings in the world next to the Shanghai Ranking and QS Ranking. Sumy State University entered this prestigious ranking for the first time. SumDU managed to clear the electoral barrier by a number of established scientific publications for the last 5 years and to demonstrate competitive results by the index of research activity, that takes up about 75% of the ranking methodology. THE counts research chops of HEIs in Scopus database, results of scientific community survey regarding the quality of scientific activity in other universities, financial indicators of research providing etc.

On September 7th-8th Bratislava (Slovakia) hosted the Judo Europe Cup. The competition was participated by 384 sportsmen from 34 world countries, including the student of the Medical Institute of Sumy State University (major “Sport”) Hevorh Manukian. Hevorh held 5 fights in the weight category up to 81 kg and won 4 of them. He only lost to a sportsman from Belarus Yusup Bekmurzaiev in the semifinal. But the failure didn’t break Hevorh’s mood. In the fight for the 3rd place he defeated his team fellow Eldar Panhini and won the opportunity to be on the pedestal of honor.

Sumy State University scientists are successfully undergoing internships in foreign higher education institutions. They are sharing their experience with the colleagues and learn from their views on teaching and specific researches. The year of 2019 was full of successful internships for lecturers of the Department of German Philology of SumDU.

On September 2nd the sculpture “Monument commemorating a student warrior” was opened at SumDU. The sculpture is set in honor of students and graduates of SumDU, who died defending the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The idea of sculpture installing belongs to Vladyslav Filatov, the student of Oleg Balatskyi Academic and Research Institute of Finance, Economics and Management, and Oksana Oparii, the graduate of Faculty of Electronics and Information Technologies. The project won the competition of student initiatives, which was held by the student government of SumDU, and was supported by SumDU with organization and finances.

On August 30th, Sumy State University hosted a spectacular major holiday symbolizing the countdown of the new academic year - the student initiation ceremony. Numerous staff of SumDU, senior students, families and friends gathered at the university square to congratulate yesterday's schoolchildren.

Celebrations have traditionally begun with the introduction of the national flag on the square. This year the main symbol of Ukraine was put at the university square by a participant of military operations and international peacekeeping efforts, awardee of the “Medal of the Peacemaker” and other state awards and honors of the Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Colonel Ihor V. Lehankov, accompanied by master students who achieved high results in education, research activity and sport. The introduction of flags of the university's institutes and faculties by the students` deans was accompanied by a storm of applause.

Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) announced the results of the competition 2019 in direction “Development of higher education potential” of the European Union Erasmus+ Program. Overall European Committee selected 163 projects including 8 projects with participation of Ukraine, that will commence their activity in October 2019. General budget of the projects for Ukraine is more than € 7 150 000.

Spanish National Research Council published the first edition of the international Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics). Now Sumy State University is the first among higher education institutions of Ukraine.

Webometrics Ranking has been analyzing about 25 000 world HEIs that have their own web resources for more than 15 years. The main idea of the ranking is evaluating of scientific, academic and social missions of the universities via indicators of the university’s presentation in web space.

On July 16, the academic, research and manufacturing centre “Technologies for Modern Engineering Materials” was opened in Sumy State University within the partnership with the European manufacturing companies. The centre was opened by the Rector of Sumy State University Anatoliy Vasylyev together with the representatives of Czech companies: Mikhail Voleinyk, the General Manager and Liudmyla Fatkova, the Head of HR department of F.X MEILLER Slaný company; Oleksii Dashutin, the Technical Director and Kyrylo Kasaiev, the Executive Director of AIR Supply company.

On the last days of the World Universiade, which was held in Naples, Italy, the archers from Sumy State University won two bronze medals at once!

The doctoral student of the Academic and Research Institute of Business Technologies “UAB”, Polina Rodionova, a member of Ukrainian women's team, celebrated the victory in the bronze final of Olympic archery competitions among female teams. On the way to the bronze prize, Ukrainian archers won the teams of Indonesia (5-3) and Chinese Taipei (5-4).
