On September 25th Sumy State University welcomed the delegation of Koblenz-Landau University, Germany consisted of the following participants: Iryna Shalaginova – the Head of the International Department, office of the University President; Ines Tobis – the Head of the International Students Center of the Koblenz campus and Jutta Bohn – the Head of the International Department of the Landau campus. The visit took place within the implementation of the joint grant project of the EU Erasmus+ programme in the direction of academic mobility.
From 15th to 20th of September, the traditional 2019 IEEE 9th International Conference «Nanomaterials: Applications & Properties» took place in Odessa. The conference was attended by more than 220 participants (more than 100 of them are foreigners) from about 30 world countries including Poland, Belarus, the USA, Germany, Japan, China, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Canada, France and Turkey. The representatives of Australia and Greece took part in the conference for the first time.
On September 9th-12th Italian city of Trento hosted the final stage of the Rollerskis Junior World Cup. On the first day of competition the student of the Medical Institute of Sumy State University (major “Sport”) Daryna Kovaliova won the gold medal in the classic style uphill race for 2,5 km edging the Russian rival Olga Potapova by 14,5 seconds. Our sportswoman won one more award on the last day of this stage. Daryna was the second who reached the finish line in the classic style race for 13 km and got the silver medal.
Yuliia Bondarenko and Svitlana Voropai, SumDU teachers of the Department of Journalism and Philology, together with the students of Sumy Classical Gymnasium №1 visited Poland within the German project “Musik treffen”. Together with Ukrainian students Polish and German students joined the event. As the result of the week-long collaboration, pupils prepared and presented the concert, that took place at the theatre of Kwidzyn city, which was attended by the representatives of the Mayor’s Office and the local schools’ administration. After the concert, Polish students invited Ukrainian and German friends to their school for the excursion.
In the beginning of September Polish city of Krynica-Zdrój hosted the 29th Economic Forum - the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. As a part of the collaboration between Sumy State University and the Institute for Eastern European Studies (Warsaw), co-organizer of the Economic Forum, ten SumDU students participated in the Forum as volunteers. This year Economic Forum has traditionally gathered over 4,500 participants - scientists, representatives of public organizations, government and business from Europe, Asia, the United States and the Middle East.
On September 12th Sumy State University welcomed representatives of higher education institutions of Shaanxi province (China). The delegation visit was held within the International Ukrainian-Chinese conference on the development of external economic cooperation in the sphere of educational service providing and scientific and technical cooperation that took place in the Congress Center of SumDU. During the event Sumy State University and 6 Chinese universities presented scientific and educational potential of their institutions. Also, Chinese colleagues got acquainted with Library&Infromation Center of SumDU, recently opened second stage of the New Academic and Research building and Valleyball Center. At the end of the meeting parties signed bilateral agreement among higher education institutions in the sphere of education and scientific cooperation.
On September 11th, Sumy State University hosted a workshop “Ukraine-NATO: partnership for the sake of peace”. Students of the majors “Translation”, “Social Work” and “Management of Sociocultural Activity” had heard the lecture of the international security policy specialist, Director of the Foreign Policy Research Institute Hryhorii Perepelytsia on the topic of “NATO Key Challenges, Values and Principles in Ukraine”. The students also spoke with the First Secretary of the British Embassy in Ukraine James Roed-Moore and project experts. The participants learned how to distinguish between misinformation during the simulation game "Countering Propaganda Information Attacks Against Ukraine-NATO Cooperation on the example of regional media messages as a component of cybersecurity". Within the game, students tried themselves as analysts, preparing materials to counteract the information attacks against Ukraine's cooperation with NATO, and were able to understand the nature of hybrid war myths and to learn to distinguish them from reports in the media and social networks.
On September 11th at the World Academic summit in Zurich the Times Higher Education ranking agency (THE) presented the results of its flagman ranking THE World University Rankings of 2020. The ranking evaluates specifically research-intensive universities and considered to be one of the most established rankings in the world next to the Shanghai Ranking and QS Ranking. Sumy State University entered this prestigious ranking for the first time. SumDU managed to clear the electoral barrier by a number of established scientific publications for the last 5 years and to demonstrate competitive results by the index of research activity, that takes up about 75% of the ranking methodology. THE counts research chops of HEIs in Scopus database, results of scientific community survey regarding the quality of scientific activity in other universities, financial indicators of research providing etc.
On September 7th-8th Bratislava (Slovakia) hosted the Judo Europe Cup. The competition was participated by 384 sportsmen from 34 world countries, including the student of the Medical Institute of Sumy State University (major “Sport”) Hevorh Manukian. Hevorh held 5 fights in the weight category up to 81 kg and won 4 of them. He only lost to a sportsman from Belarus Yusup Bekmurzaiev in the semifinal. But the failure didn’t break Hevorh’s mood. In the fight for the 3rd place he defeated his team fellow Eldar Panhini and won the opportunity to be on the pedestal of honor.
Sumy State University scientists are successfully undergoing internships in foreign higher education institutions. They are sharing their experience with the colleagues and learn from their views on teaching and specific researches. The year of 2019 was full of successful internships for lecturers of the Department of German Philology of SumDU.
