On 28 January 2026, a staff conference was held at SumDU. The main issue was results of university activities in 2025 and definition of key tasks for 2026.
Summing up the past year, Vasyl KARPUSHA (SumDU rector) emphasized that despite the war and significant infrastructure losses, the university has remained stable and keeps developing.
The new year began with impressive achievements by students participating at the SumDU Cultural and Art Center. Throughout January, they represented the university with dignity at international festivals and competitions. Although participation in the events took place remotely, the sincere emotions from victories, reinforced by high results and diplomas, became a real holiday gift.
On 23 January 2026, a landmark event for scientific community took place. It was the Second National Forum of Talented Youth, which brought together over 600 participants from all over the country. During the event, Volodymyr ZELENSKY (President of Ukraine) presented state awards to the best young scientists, including a SumDU member.
On 21 January 2025, Times Higher Education (one of the most authoritative ranking agencies in higher education) announced ranking results of the world best universities in 11 fields of knowledge.
Sumy State University was included in five areas of the World University Rankings by Subject 2026:
On 7-14 January 2026, the Slavic Cup and the Ukrainian Cross-Country Skiing Championship took place at the Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center of the National Sports Complex of Ukraine. SumDU students demonstrated a high level of training and won many awards.
At the Slavic Cup stage, SumDU athletes climbed the podium three times in individual 10 km races:
On 14 January 2026, a regional round table was held to present and validate projects within the European Clusters4Regions initiative. The event brought together representatives of government agencies, cluster associations, businesses, experts, and higher education institutions. Also, there were SumDU specialists.
Participants were informed about approval of the Regional Cluster Development Program of the Sumy Region for 2025-2027. It was adopted in accordance with Order 704-ОД as of 27 October 2025. SumDU took active part in its development.
Sumy State University is actively introducing innovative digital resources into the educational process of training specialists in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and sports medicine.
The university has become an example of modern education transformation in rehabilitation by effectively integrating the international Physiopedia Plus platform into its curricula.
Two research projects of Sumy State University have been selected as winners of the “Excellent Science in Ukraine 2026–2028” Call and will be implemented with the support of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU).
The project “Science as a Tool of Propaganda: Detection, Analysis, and Counteraction Using the Case of the Russian Scientific System” developed by researchers of the Academic and Research Institute of Business, Economics and Management received 92.7 points out of 100 following expert evaluation.
Sumy State University has once again confirmed its high scientific potential by winning a contest for fundamental and applied research projects and scientific and technical (experimental) developments of young scientists. It had been organized by the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science.
Stephen GETHINS and Jordan MEAD (representatives of the British Parliament) visited Sumy State University.
The guests inspected the SumDU infrastructure damaged by rocket strikes, the restoration of which is important to preserve the educational and scientific potential of Sumy and Ukraine.
